Which fruit is stored at which temperatures
Fruit and vegetables are of vital importance for human body. They are even more impoirtant than meat. Refrigerated warehouses for fruit are the places where you can preserve quality of fruit for a longer period. Farmers need to carefully choose type and sort of fruit to start with, and further, the steps that follow the harvest are important - transport of products and storage in refrigerated warehouses for fruit.
First steps in fruit storage
The first and basic rule, if you wish to tranport your products to a refrigerated warehouse as efficiently as possible, is to do that very fast, imediatelly after the harvest. That way you slow down the process of parishing and spoiling of fruit, as we know that the fruit is still alive after harvesting and it needs good care. As for the methods of storage in refrigerated warehouses for fruit, all depends on type and sort of fruit. Higer temperatures stimulate ripening of fruit, i.e. cause internal chemical changes, and lower temperatures significantly slow down the processes. An important feature of the refrigerated warehouses for fruit is high relative humidity of air, which is important for good conservation.
Methods of storage in refrigerated warehouses for fruit
A lot of factors have key and important roles in the process of storage in refrigerated warehouses for fruit. Some of the factors are sensitivity to temperature change, oxygen and humidity. Only after all is carefully thought over and reviewed - we can proceed with proper storage in a selected refrigerated warehouse for fruit.
Apples have special characteristics compared to other fruit types. Why apples? They can be stored in refrigerated warehouses for up to 12 months, i.e. up to a year. The origin of apples has to be taken into consideration, i.e. region of origin, their quality and packaging. One of the aims of storage in refrigerated warehouses for fruit is slowing down the process of ripening and breathing.
While setting an appropriate temperature in refrigerated warehouses for fruit a few issues need to be taken into consideration. Length of storage is not always the same, it is important to identify particular sort of fruit and, of course, to determine the desired condition of fruit after taking it out of the warehouse. Apples tolerate temperatures from -1.4 °C to -2.8 °C, although they are rarely stored at temperatures bellow 0 °C. Desirable storage temperatures for apples in refrigerated warehouses are from 0 °C to 3 °C.
As pears are very similar to apples, they are stored at temperatures from -1 °C to 0 °C, while they can be preserved only 3 to 6 months. Similarly, quince is stored in refrigerated warehouses at temperatures from -0.5 °C to 0 °C.
Pears, apricots, plums, cherries and sour cherries can be stored at slightly higher temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 5 °C. These types of fruit can only be stored for a shorter period of time in refrigerated warehouses for fruit.
Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries require temperatures from -0.5 °C to 0 °C. If you wish to store citrus and tropical fruit - such as oranges, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, banana and kiwi - a special attention should be paid, as these fruits are kept at differen temperatures and at different parts of refrigerated warehouses.
Bananas require temperatires from 13 °C to 15 °C, lemon from 10 °C to 13 °C, oranges from 0 °C to 10 °C, tangerines from 4 °C to 7 °C, kiwi requires an ideal temperature of 0 °C and pineapple from 7 °C to 13 °C.
We finally need to mention berries, like cranberries, blueberry, red currant, but also grapes. The ideal temperature in refrigerated warehouses for those are from 0 °C to 5 °C, and the length of the storage is 2 to 3 weeks.
